Accurascale is set to produce a fresh collection of BR Class 08 diesel-electric shunters in OO gauge. Development is well advanced, with engineering prototypes already in the hands of the project manager for assessment.
The original Class 08 was launched in 1952, based on an LMS design. Nearly 1,000 locomotives were built at the British Rail works – at Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich. An additional 140 Class 10 0-6-0 diesel shunters, powered by a Lister Blackstone ER6T engine, followed in similar form. The Class 09, a higher-geared version, came next; its top speed of 27.5mph allowed it to run on main-line paths while still handling shunting work.
Later, a handful of Class 08s were fitted with shortened cabs for the Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway in South Wales, where height constraints made the standard cab unsuitable. Some of these were subsequently converted to Class 09/1 or 09/2 variants.
The new OO model will boast a five-pole motor, twin flywheels and a 21-pin Digital Command Control socket. The cab will feature working directional/shunting lights, see-through etched grilles, sprung metal buffers, separate metal handrails, opening doors, a detailed interior and a magnetic, removable roof section. Other elements include separate roof lifting points, pipework, lamp irons, grab handles and more.
Initially nine models will be available, comprising three Class 08/9 versions – the first of their kind to appear as ready-to-run OO gauge. The Class 08/9 locomotives will be released as 08994 Gwendraeth in BR Railfreight grey, 08995 Kidwelly in BR Railfreight Coal triple grey and 08993 in EWS maroon and gold. Two Class 10s will be available as 13145 in BR black and D3450 in BR green, while standard Class 08s will be released as 08910 in BR blue, 08912 in BR blue with a black cab roof, 08521 Vicky in Freightliner green and 08785 in Freightliner G & W orange.
Unit prices are listed at £159.99 for DCC ready and £249.99 when sound is fitted. The launch is currently targeted for early 2027.
