Accurascale expands FEA wagon range

Accurascale has announced a further addition to its 00/4mm scale FEA wagon range, launching a single‑unit FEA family that will be used for intermodal and infrastructure duties. The first production run will comprise GB Railfreight wagons supplied in twin packs that include Salmon track panel modules and container traffic variants.

The prototype FEA wagon family first entered service in 2003 with the introduction of the twin‑unit FEA‑B container flats for Freightliner’s Intermodal division. Roughly 18 months later, single‑unit variants began to appear, mainly for infrastructure use.

The initial model release focuses on wagons associated with GB Railfreight infrastructure operations.

Three twin‑packs will be produced covering Metronet‑branded wagons carrying Salmon track panel modules. Both yellow and blue wagon liveries are represented.

Two additional versions will also be offered for the first time: a blue GB Railfreight wagon carrying Salmon modules and a bare‑branded yellow GB Railfreight wagon configured for container traffic.

Accurascale reports that the model incorporates updates to the existing FEA tooling to improve accuracy and durability.

Changes include revised deck profiles to represent wagons fitted with fixed container spigots and the removal of pipe runs not present on the prototype. Handrails and footsteps missing from previous GB Railfreight versions have also been added.

The supplied 20ft Salmon modules feature textured flooring and lashing rings, along with newly tooled extension sections between the module ends and the wagon headstocks.

Early single‑unit FEA wagons were operated by Balfour Beatty and GB Railfreight.

Balfour Beatty introduced six grey FEA‑D wagons for use on New Track Construction trains. GB Railfreight acquired 63 steel‑blue FEA‑S wagons designed to carry 20ft Salmon track panel modules and Tench materials modules.

A further batch of 66 FEA‑E wagons was delivered to Freightliner Heavy Haul from December 2004 to support infrastructure contracts with Network Rail. These were finished in British Racing Green and later saw use in container and domestic waste traffic.

In 2006, GB Railfreight introduced a fleet of bright yellow FEA‑S wagons for the Metronet London Underground renewals contract, followed by additional wagons supplied for the Tube Lines subsidiary Transplant. These vehicles were converted into Rail and Sleeper Delivery Trains using specialist “Slinger” equipment before eventually being withdrawn from infrastructure duties.

Despite variations in classification, most single‑unit FEAs were built to a common configuration, with the exception of the Rail Head Treatment Train variant constructed for Network Rail. Later modifications to some wagons saw fold‑down container spigots replaced with fixed versions.

As newer infrastructure wagons entered service, a number of FEAs migrated into general container operations, with some formations dismantled and wagons returning to more conventional traffic.

Accurascale will release the models in twin‑packs priced at £79.99.

Discounts of 10 % will apply to orders of two to four packs, rising to 15 % on orders of five or more. All UK orders include free postage and packaging.

The models will be available exclusively through the Accurascale website, with pre‑orders open now and delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2027
