Accurascale announces OO gauge Class 153 and Class 155 DMUs

Accurascale has launched new OO gauge models of the Class 153 and Class 155 diesel multiple units. The two well‑known Sprinter variants will re-enter the market in ready‑to‑run form, each featuring updated electronics, lighting and audio options.

Pre‑orders are now open and delivery is planned for the first quarter of 2027.

Liveries

Accurascale will produce the units in authentic liveries that reflect the various markings the original trains carried on the network.

Features and specifications

The models preserve the original moulding and finish of earlier editions while receiving a comprehensive new electronics system.

Key inclusions are an ESU printed circuit board, factory‑mounted speakers, magnetic BSI couplers, and an advanced DCC sound system on audio‑equipped versions.

Lighting functions include:

A low‑profile motor is fitted and a Stay‑Alive system is incorporated to ensure reliable operation. Both classes will be available in DC/DCC Ready and DCC sound‑fitted variants.

Prototype information

The Class 155 was introduced in the late 1980s as part of British Rail’s effort to modernise regional passenger services. Two‑car units were designed for cross‑country duties in regions such as Wales, the North West and the South West, where they replaced older diesel multiple units and locomotive‑hauls.

Initial service proved troublesome, mainly due to door reliability problems, leading to a temporary withdrawal.

By the early 1990s, evolving operational needs and the arrival of the Class 158 made the two‑car formation less suitable for some rural and lightly used routes. British Rail responded by re‑building the fleet as single‑car units.

Work was carried out at Hunslet‑Barclay’s Kilmarnock works from 1991, giving each vehicle a second, smaller cab and refreshed interiors before they emerged as Class 153s.

The rebuilt units became a familiar sight across much of the network, running on branch lines and local services either alone or in multiple with other Sprinter and Pacer types. Their range extended from Cornwall to Cumbria and from East Anglia to the Midlands.

Following privatisation, the class passed through several operators and liveries, largely maintaining the same role. Some examples have since been withdrawn, while others remain in use in specialised roles, including for Transport for Wales and Network Rail.

Pricing and availability

Accurascale will supply the models directly and through a retail network of more than 170 stockists worldwide, with delivery currently scheduled for Q1 2027.
