Accurascale has introduced a new OO gauge collection of ODA wagons, representative of the distinctive fleets that served British Rail freight duties.
Known for their versatility during the 1980s and beyond, these wagons gained a reputation as some of the most adaptable units in the later British Rail era. Originally rebuilt from BR “Pipe” wagons that once carried steel lengths, the ODA fleet later performed a breadth of tasks, from Ministry of Defence logistics to departmental and infrastructure work. Their varied histories have seen them appear in several liveries, making them suitable for layouts that span both the BR and post‑privatisation periods.
Livery information
The earliest ODAs were operated in Railfreight red and grey, a liveried scheme closely linked to military stores and palletised freight operations of the 1980s. As the wagons’ roles evolved, they adopted a range of departmental and engineers’ liveries, including Satlink, Project Mercury and EWS. Accurascale’s range reflects this diversity with era‑appropriate finishes and markings.
Features and specifications
Each model boasts a die‑cast metal chassis to enhance stability and running performance, coupled with chemically blackened wheels and brass bearings. Accurascale has also fitted separate underframe components such as brake gear and suspension detail, along with period‑specific markings, NEM couplings and accessory parts.
Prototype information
The prototype ODA wagons were reconstructed in the early 1980s from an LNER‑derived design to support Ministry of Defence logistics traffic. The rebuild programme adapted the wagons for operation on tighter curves and in locations where longer units were unsuitable. Although initially earmarked for military traffic, the fleet subsequently became commonplace on engineers’ and departmental services, extending its working life far beyond its original purpose.
Pricing and availability
Pre‑orders for the OO gauge ODA range are accepted exclusively through Accurascale, with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Single wagon packs start at £29.99, while triple packs begin at £79.98. Accurascale offers a 10% Rake Builder discount when two or more packs are purchased together, and provides free UK delivery on orders over £50.
