Having set out to create my own version of Ffarquhar, it would be a sorry state of affairs if I didn't take my inspiration from the original layout... well the Mk2 version at least! The Ffarquhar Branch is the Rev. W. Awdry's own model of Ffarquhar station, the main terminus of Thomas The Tank Engine's Branchline on The Island Of Sodor.
Built in 1968, this is the second version of the station that Awdry created - the original version sitting on a typical 6ft x 4ft baseboard. When the Reverend realised that Ffarquhar Mk1 wouldn't fit in his new car to take to exhibitions, he set about rebuilding it into the Mk2 version seen today.
The Ffarquhar Branch has been restored to working order by The Talyllyn Railway who still exhibit it to this day! The layout is usually on static display in the museum at The Talyllyn Railway or you can see it in action at the Manchester Christmas Model Railway exhibition on 13th-14th December 2025!
Many thanks to Luke Ryan & The Talyllyn Railway for the behind the scenes access, the 20% discount code and of course all the research materials for my own layout.
