The Ffestiniog Railway, located in North Wales, is the world’s oldest surviving independent railway company, founded in 1832. Originally constructed to transport slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the port at Porthmadog, it was engineered with a distinctive narrow gauge of just 1 ft 11½ in (597 mm), perfectly suited to the winding, mountainous terrain of Snowdonia. Among its many innovations were gravity-powered slate trains running downhill and horses hauling the empty wagons back uphill.
In the 1860s, the line became the first narrow-gauge railway in the world to successfully introduce steam locomotives—an engineering breakthrough that set new standards for railway design. Although the decline of the slate industry led to its closure in 1946, passionate volunteers revived and restored the line in the 1950s. Today, the Ffestiniog Railway once again connects Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog, operating as a beloved heritage railway celebrated for its pioneering spirit, breathtaking scenery, and remarkable preservation story.
Inspired by this proud legacy—and that of the equally iconic Welsh Highland Railway—PECO and KATO England are delighted to present two exclusive new locomotive packs. Each set features exquisitely detailed locomotives paired with unique, specially liveried rolling stock, available only in these collections. Presented in a premium collector’s box with custom packaging, a striking outer sleeve, and an individually numbered certificate, these sets capture the authenticity, craftsmanship, and enduring passion that define the spirit of Welsh narrow-gauge railways.
