The invention of steam locomotives created a requirement for watering facilities, and at stations, loco depots and other key sites columns like this would be provided for quick and easy watering of locomotives. Many of these facilities remained in use once diesel traction took over, filling the water tanks needed to feed the steam-heating boilers that were fitted to many first-generation diesels.
