Prototype Era
Era 8 (1983 to 1994) British Rail Sectorisation
Model features:
165 vacuum braked Borails were built to diagrams 1/482 and 1/483 in the late 1950s. The Borails were built with 8' plate bogies and vacuum brakes.
During the mid-1980s the Borail BRAs were moved into Departmental use and some remain in use today. The move to Departmental use saw the YLAs used to transport rail from Workington to various BR depots. Many Mullets remain in Departmental use and can often be found with several at the head of an engineers train. Since 2018 EWS/DB have used Mullets to carry out of gauge pipes from Hartlepool to Georgemas Junction, some have been repainted into EWS livery.

Revolution Trains YLA Mullets Railfreight Red & Yellow Mullet branding – Twin Pack (product code RT‑OO‑YLA‑405) is a 1:76.2 scale OO gauge model representing British Rail sectorisation. The pack contains two wagons, each with a different number (DC967594 and DC967620), and reproduces the visual differences in buffers, bogies and brake gear.
The models feature RP25.110 gauge wheels on 26 mm axles, NEM coupler sockets and can negotiate a minimum radius of the “2nd radius” specification. They are designed for highly accurate detail and are suitable for use on standard OO gauge layouts.
The real YLA mullet wagons were part of a series of 165 vacuum‑braked Borails built to diagrams 1/482 and 1/483 in the late 1950s, using 8‑ft plate bogies. In the mid‑1980s many of these wagons were transferred to Departmental use, where they were employed to haul rail from Workington to various British Rail depots and were often seen at the head of engineering trains.
Since 2018 the mullets have also been used by EWS/DB to transport out‑of‑gauge pipework from Hartlepool to Georgemas Junction, and a number of units have been repainted in EWS livery.
