Rapido Trains UK has announced a new OO gauge model of the Southern Railway's U Class 2-6-0 locomotive, specifically the BR Lined Black Late Crest version, represented by No.31627.

This model is part of a range of OO gauge locomotives that will represent the Southern Railway and British Railways U Class locos. The U Class locos were introduced during the interwar period by the Southern Railway, with the first batch being built in 1928 as a result of the Sevenoaks Railway accident, which led to the decision to rebuild 20 K Class locos as 2-6-0 tender locos.

The U Class locos were designed by Richard Maunsell, who borrowed design ideas from other railways and built on his previous designs, such as the N Class. The locos were used for semi-fast and cross-country duties and were known for their reliability. A total of 50 locos were built, with the rebuilt and new-built examples differing in detail.

The model will feature a highly detailed representation of the U Class loco, including a 4,000-gallon tender, U1 type chimney, flat fronted cylinders, and flat dome. The model will also include a range of detailing variants, including flush and riveted buffer beams, flat or rounded domes, and smoke deflectors.

The model will be available in OO gauge, with a smooth-running mechanism, factory-installed speakers, NEM coupler pockets, and other features such as a 21-pin DCC decoder socket, MoPower stay-alive capacitor, tender pickups, and firebox flicker with a dynamic fire draw effect. The model will be suitable for operation on 2nd radius curves of 438mm or greater.
