Specific Locomotive History
No.2044 arrived in Manchester in April 1943 and was originally allocated to the LMS at Toton. In July 1943 the locomotive was one of 5 S160s re-assigned to the War Department. Based at Sudbury in Staffordshire, there is a rumour that in August of that year it was in ’specially painted’ colours. A Barnsley fireman recalls that some of the locos were painted khaki or ’drab’. If any S160s appeared in green, 2044 is therefore the most likely candidate.
It was returned to the USATC for deployment in September 1944. The engine worked in France with the USATC before becoming part of the SNCF fleet until July 1946. The locomotive subsequently moved to Poland and joined the PKP fleet as Tr203.5.

Rapido OO gauge 926011 USATC S160 2‑8‑0, ‘2044’, WD Drab is a limited‑edition model released by Clark Railworks. It is listed as an exclusive product on the Clark Railworks website and is available both DCC ready (£269.95) and with DCC sound (£379.95). The model is currently in tooling with samples expected in autumn.
The locomotive is modelled in OO gauge and carries the wartime WD Drab colour scheme. It replicates the ALCO‑built S160 built in Schenectady in July 1943, bearing the manufacturer part number 926511. The era represented is the “Big Four” period (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
Specific history of the prototype: No 2044 arrived in Manchester in April 1943 and was initially allocated to the LMS at Toton.
