Rapido Trains UK is to produce a second run of its popular ‘OO’ gauge Hunslet 16in 0-6-0ST.
The 16in 0-6-0ST was the largest of a range of ‘standard’ locomotives offered by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds. Customers could buy similar looking locomotives with 12, 14 and 15in diameter cylinders. They were designed for industry where owners were looking for a locomotive that was economical, simple to operate and easy to maintain. Customers could choose extra embellishments.
Prototype Factfile Built: 1923-1958 (44 built) How long did they last? Hunslet 16in 0-6-0STs were still in revenue-earning service well into the 1970s. Where did they work? Rapido 16‑inch Hunslet “John Shaw”, NCB South Kirkby Colliery livery, No 2375 – a steam tank locomotive model prepared for DCC operation (DCC 18). It carries the manufacturer part number 903016SR and represents a British Railways late‑crest locomotive.
The model is an OO‑scale (4 mm to the foot) replica of the Hunslet 16‑inch 0‑6‑0ST, the largest in the standard Hunslet range originally built between 1923 and 1958 (44 examples). These locomotives remained in revenue‑earning service into the 1970s, principally on mines, collieries and quarries in Yorkshire, the Midlands and a power station in Wales; five were exported. At least nine examples survive in Britain.
Construction features include die‑cast bodies, a quality mechanism, a Next 18 decoder socket, NEM coupler pockets and sprung buffers. The model is designed from original works drawings and field visits, offering a high level of detail with many separately fitted parts and individual key detail variations.
Rapido Trains UK is issuing a second run of this popular Hunslet 16‑inch 0‑6‑0ST model, aimed at collectors and railway enthusiasts who require accurate representation and DCC readiness.
