Rapido Trains UK is to produce a second run of its popular ‘OO’ gauge Hunslet 16in 0-6-0ST.
The 16in 0-6-0ST was the largest of a range of ‘standard’ locomotives offered by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds. Customers could buy similar looking locomotives with 12, 14 and 15in diameter cylinders. They were designed for industry where owners were looking for a locomotive that was economical, simple to operate and easy to maintain. Customers could choose extra embellishments.
Prototype Factfile Built: 1923-1958 (44 built) How long did they last? Hunslet 16in 0-6-0STs were still in revenue-earning service well into the 1970s. Where did they work? Mines, collieries and quarries throughout Yorkshire and the Midlands although one worked in a power station in Wales. Five were built for export. Can I see one? There are at least nine left in Britain.
Here’s the specification of our ‘OO’ gauge model:

Rapido 16" Hunslet “Beatrice” Lined Green No 2705 is an OO‑scale model of a steam tank locomotive, reproduced in the livery of the preserved example at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. The model is DCC ready, equipped with a DCC 18 decoder, carries the manufacturer part number 903013SR and represents a British Railways Early Crest locomotive.
The prototype was a 16‑inch 0‑6‑0ST built by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds, the largest of a series that also included 12, 14 and 15‑inch cylinder versions. Between 1923 and 1958 a total of 44 examples were constructed. They remained in revenue‑earning service into the 1970s, working in mines, collieries and quarries throughout Yorkshire and the Midlands, with one example operating in a Welsh power station and five exported abroad. At least nine examples survive in Britain today.
The Rapido model is based on original works drawings and field visits to surviving 16‑inch Hunslets. It features die‑cast construction, a high‑quality mechanism, a Next18 decoder socket, NEM coupler pockets and sprung buffers. Individual locomotives receive key detail variations and the model includes a high level of detail with many separately fitted parts.
