The XR3, introduced three years earlier, straddled the divide between being a three-door, state-of-the-art family car and the powerful instrument loved by young - mostly male - drivers. The XR3i came with an improved spec including a modified engine system giving 105bhp at 6000 rpm, a top speed of 120 mph and a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds. The car's visual racy image included alloy wheels, special tyres and a large rubber spoiler. Several police forces purchased these cars and here we show one in Durham Police paintwork with the registration A278 BJR.
