We come closer to home for the second release on our new Thornycroft Nubian Major fire vehicle.
In 1971 Glamorgan County Council ordered two Thornycroft Nubian-Major/Carmichael Jetranger foam tenders for the county's Cardiff-Rhoose Airport. The first, painted in an all over red livery, was based at the airport and manned by airport fire personnel; the second one was finished in Glamorgan Fire Brigade's unusual white over red livery. This one, as depicted in Oxford's latest model release and registered HNY 589K was based at the county fire brigade's Bridgend fire station, manned by the county fire brigade personnel. When turned out to an airport emergency it would travel to the airport using the public road network. The machine was later sold to Newcastle Airport where it retained its dual livery prompting the airport authority to repaint the rest of the Newcastle Airport Fire Service fleet in the same livery.

Oxford Diecast Thornycroft Nubian Major – Glamorgan Fire Service (1:76)
Manufacturer part number 76TN002. The model represents a Thornycroft Nubian‑Major/Carmichael Jetranger foam tender in the British Rail Blue (pre‑TOPS) period, produced at a 1:76 scale.
In 1971 Glamorgan County Council ordered two of these fire appliances for Cardiff‑Rhoose Airport. One was painted in an all‑red livery for airport fire crews; the second, shown in this model, carried the Glamorgan Fire Brigade’s white‑over‑red colour scheme, bore the registration HNY 589K and was based at the brigade’s Bridgend fire station. When required for airport incidents the vehicle would travel to the airport on the public road network.
The Bridgend unit was later sold to Newcastle Airport, where it retained its dual colour scheme. The unique livery prompted the Newcastle Airport Fire Service to repaint the remainder of its fleet in matching colours.
