The name Golf comes from the German word for Gulf Stream - Golf Storm, an oceanic air current. They were fond of calling their VW models after famous winds at one time, including the VW Sirocco, Bora, Jetta and Passat, as well as the Golf. Designed by an Italian automobile designer - Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Golf featured a water-cooled engine, front wheel drive and a hatchback shape. Its mechanical attributes ensured crisp handling and good road holding, ideal for the 'hot hatch' youth of the day - and it was comfortable into the bargain.

Oxford Diecast Black Golf GTI – 1:76 Scale is a die‑cast model produced to represent the Volkswagen Golf GTI during the British Rail sectorisation era. The model carries the manufacturer part number 76GF002.
The Golf name derives from the German term for the Gulf Stream, and Volkswagen historically named several models after notable winds, such as the Sirocco, Bora, Jetta and Passat. The vehicle was designed by Italian automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and features a water‑cooled engine, front‑wheel drive and a hatchback body shape.
Its mechanical layout provided precise handling and good road holding, characteristics that made the original car popular with the “hot hatch” youth market of the time, while also offering a comfortable interior. The model is finished in black and rendered at a 1:76 scale.
