Manufacturer description

When production of the older Ford Anglia and Ford Prefect stopped in 1953 the Popular was developed as a budget alternative. The Popular was based on the old, prewar-style E494A Anglia. Costing under £400 including tax, it was the lowest price car around. Its top speed was around 60 mph with a fuel consumption of around 36 mpg. It was powered by a Ford Sidevalve 1172 cc, 30 bhp, four cylinder engine. It had a single vacuum powered wiper, no heater, vinyl trim and very little chrome. Over 150,000 Populars were made. Shown here in blue.

Oxford Diecast Ford Popular 103E – 1:76 scale model in blue. The kit bears the manufacturer part number 76FP001.

The model represents the Ford Popular 103E as it appeared in the British Railways late crest period, following the cessation of production of the older Ford Anglia and Ford Prefect in 1953. It was marketed as a low‑cost alternative, based on the pre‑war E494A Anglia design, and sold for under £400 including tax.

The real car was powered by a Ford side‑valve 1172 cc four‑cylinder engine producing 30 bhp, giving a top speed of about 60 mph and a fuel consumption of roughly 36 mpg. It featured a single vacuum‑operated wiper, no heater, vinyl trim and minimal chrome. Over 150 000 examples were built. The diecast model captures these details in miniature form.
