The Coventry branch of the Post Office Ambulance Corps - the first branch to buy its own vehicle- in 1963 purchased this particular example of the GPO ambulance fleet. It carries the authentic number plate MLB 986. Although completely separate from the St John Ambulance Brigade, the POAC were trained on similar lines and wore similar uniforms. The GPO ambulances were used to help staff in time of need as well as performing general public assistance duties. This example - MLB 986 - is finished in white, with black lettering down the sides and a red stripe the complete length of the vehicle. The detail also extends to a chrome radiator grille and lights, chrome etched windows and windscreen wipers and white wheel inserts. The GPO service logo features on the sides and the word AMBULANCE is printed above the windscreen.
