Manufacturer description

This Bedford CA is based on the 15 cwt series which was produced between 1959 and 1969. The Bedford CA had a 90 inch wheelbase, quite small by today's standards, so they launched a 102 inch version which was designated the CAL, hence the CA became known as the CAS. The Post Office bought its first vehicle a Maudslay in 1907 and presumably the red on the vans was chosen because red had been used pillar boxes since the 1870's to increase visibility; originally they had been green. Oxford Diecast Royal Mail CA Van – 1:76 Scale

The model, reference number 76CA007, represents a Bedford CA van in the British Rail blue livery used before the introduction of TOPS. It is produced at a 1:76 scale and depicts the vehicle as it appeared during the period 1959‑1969.

The Bedford CA shown is based on the 15 cwt series, which featured a 90‑inch wheelbase. A longer 102‑inch version, known as the CAL, was later introduced, with the original model becoming the CAS. The Royal Mail’s choice of red colour for its vans reflects the historic use of red on pillar boxes from the 1870s, a change from the earlier green.

The Royal Mail has operated thousands of such vehicles for door‑to‑door mail delivery across the United Kingdom since the Post Office acquired its first motor vehicle, a Maudslay, in 1907. The Bedford CA chassis subsequently served as the foundation for a range of commercial vehicles, making it a notable example of mid‑20th‑century postal transport.
