The development of the ATV started in 1941 when the government ordered 2000 two-ton vans. In the same year the Auxilliary Fire Service was nationalised to become the National Fire Service with the ATV's being absorbed into the new body. After the War, many of the ATV's were transferred to local authority fire brigades. Amazingly some of the Austin K2 ATVs were still being used with fire brigades until the late 1970s.

Oxford Diecast NFS Austin ATV – 1:76 Scale is a die‑cast model of the Austin K2 amphibious tractor used by the National Fire Service. The model carries the manufacturer part number 76ATV001 and depicts the vehicle as it appeared during the British Railways Early Crest era.
The real‑world ATV was first developed in 1941 after the government ordered two thousand two‑ton vans for emergency use. That same year the Auxiliary Fire Service was nationalised as the National Fire Service, and the ATVs were incorporated into the new organisation. Following the war many of the vehicles were transferred to local authority fire brigades, and some remained in service with fire brigades until the late 1970s.
