Manufacturer description

The War Department (WD) “Austerity” 2-10-0 is a type of heavy freight steam locomotive that was introduced during the Second World War in 1943, and is a powerhouse of an engine. The Austerity 2-10-0 commands respect wherever it roams, its presence on the rails could not be ignored. The Austerity 2-10-0 was based on the Austerity 2-8-0, and was designed to have interchangeable parts by R.A. Riddles. It was built cheaply, but it was built powerful. It had the same power output as the 2-8-0 but a lighter axle load, making it suitable for secondary lines. 100 were built for the war effort, with 150 being built in total. Even now after 90 years, the Austerity still makes appearances on the rails, proving that the old guard won’t be put down easily.

Available in Longmoor Railway Blue, Olive Drab Green, Khaki Sand, and BR Black early crest.
Options include DCC Ready, DCC Sound and Smoke unit installed.

KR Models WD Austerity 2-10-0 601 Kitchener Steam Locomotive is a 2‑10‑0 heavy freight steam locomotive model offered in DCC 21 format. The manufacturer part number is KRM‑WDA‑OO‑601‑R and it represents the period of the British “Big Four” railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The real War Department Austerity 2‑10‑0 was introduced in 1943 as a powerful freight engine designed by R.A. Riddles with interchangeable parts based on the earlier 2‑8‑0 design. It was built cheaply but delivered the same power output as the 2‑8‑0 while having a lighter axle load suitable for secondary lines. One hundred units were produced for wartime service, bringing the total to 150, and the class continues to appear on heritage railways more than 90 years later.

The model is supplied in Longmoor Railway Blue, Olive Drab Green, Khaki Sand and early BR Black with crest. It can be ordered DCC ready and may include DCC sound and a smoke unit. Technical features include a five‑pole brushless motor, cast chassis, minimum curve radius of 438 mm (second radius set‑track), fine brass fittings, sprung buffers, firebox flicker, a 21‑pin socket, a prefitted speaker even on DCC‑ready versions, a smoke unit and NEM pocket couplings.
