In 1948 BR asked O.V.S Bulleid to come up with a solution to help reduce overcrowding on suburban routes to and from London.

In 1949 2 Double Deck units rolled off the production line, numbered 4001/4002 these were an experiment that lasted 22 years and finished on 1st October 1971.

In 1970 both units were repainted to BR Blue and renumbered to 4901 and 4902.

We will be producing both running numbers as 4 car packs. There will be 2 power cars, all will have internal lights.

KR Models Bulleid Class 4DD Double‑Decker 4‑car EMU 4901 ‘What If’ Network SouthEast – Sound fitted is a model railway kit representing a post‑war British Rail experiment to reduce suburban overcrowding. The kit includes interior lighting and is supplied ready for digital command control with sound (LokSound V5.0). The manufacturer part number is 4DD‑OO‑S‑1‑NSE.

The original prototype was ordered by British Railways in 1948, with two double‑deck units produced in 1949 and numbered 4001 and 4002. The experiment ran for 22 years, ending on 1 October 1971. In 1970 both units were repainted in British Rail blue and renumbered 4901 and 4902.
