Historically the prototype double‑deck units were ordered by British Railways in 1948 to ease suburban overcrowding. Two units, numbered 4001 and 4002, entered service in 1949 and operated for 22 years until 1 October 1971. In 1970 the locomotives were repainted in BR Blue and renumbered 4901 and 4902.
