Introduced in 1988, they were rebuilt from MGR hopper wagon, but had cut-down and welded hopper wagon bodies with a simplified side-bracing. Mainly used for carrying ballast and for spoil disposal in departmental trains, 856 conversions had been completed by the time the last was turned out in 1991.
