Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Established in the late 1870s by Charles Gush’s father, Samuel, the business started as a baker and grocer in Exminster, Devon, before expanding as General Merchants. Their services included the collection of coal from local sidings and distribution by lorry, and it operated through the 1950s and ‘60s.
Three wooden-bodied wagons were acquired for the movement of coal, numbered 10, 20 and 30. Our 5 Plank Wagon model replica is a faithful example of No.20 and the perfect addition to your freight model railway.

Hornby Charles Gush and Son – 5 Plank Wagon – No. 20 is a 00 gauge model replicating a wooden‑bodied freight wagon used for coal transport. The model carries the manufacturer part number R60303 and represents the era of the British “Big Four” railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR. It is built to scale with five planks to the side, accurately reproducing the original wagon numbered 20.
The original wagons were part of the fleet of Charles Gush and Son, a company founded in the late 1870s by Samuel Gush in Exminster, Devon. Initially a baker and grocer, the business expanded into general merchandising, collecting coal from local sidings and delivering it by lorry. Three wooden wagons – numbered 10, 20 and 30 – were used for this purpose, and the Hornby model reproduces wagon No. 20 as a detailed addition for a freight model railway.
