Manufacturer description

This newly tooled open plank wagon carrying the name ‘Charles Abell’ is an ideal model to add to a steam period freight train. Whilst wooden plank wagons were mainly used during the steam era, they remained on the rails into the diesel era and there are many still on preserved railways around the UK today making this a timeless piece to add to a model railway layout.

These private owner wagons represent one of the thousands that were used throughout the 20th century to transport goods. Wagons could be found in countless different liveries belonging to independent companies as well as railway companies. This private owner wagon is based on Charles Abell which would have mainly transported granite in the Midlands region.

The Hornby Charles Abell No 214 4 Plank Wagon is a model of a British Railways 4 Plank Wagon from the 2025 Range. It is available in OO gauge and is painted in grey. The model features fixed metal buffers and a NEM tension lock coupling. It measures 71mm in length and is modelled to represent a wagon from the pre-grouping period.

This open plank wagon is ideal for adding to a steam period freight train. Although wooden plank wagons were primarily used during the steam era, many remained in use during the diesel era and can still be seen on preserved railways throughout the UK today.

This model represents a private owner wagon, in this case, the Charles Abell wagon, which would have been used to transport goods, such as granite, in the Midlands region. The model is a suitable addition to a model railway layout due to its ability to be used in a variety of settings, including both steam and diesel era layouts.
