Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
The loading gauge on British railways could preclude the movement of tall goods on normal wagons. One solution to this was the lower the centre of the wagon so that the goods sat closer to the rail. Lowmac wagons feature a distinctive shape; a flat platform in the center with sloped platforms that rose up towards the ends making room for the wheels underneath.
