Every era 4 train needs a Brake coach at the end and this elegant Maunsell Brake Third Set is perfect. This OO gauge coach is decorated in a crimson and cream livery, with sprung metal buffers and NEM couplings for seamless connection.

History

When the Southern Railway was formed in 1923, it continued to build coach designs inherited from the main three constituent companies. 

Richard Maunsell introduced the SR’s first ‘standard’ coaches, building over 1,200 of them. These were formed into 139 sets, as it was the SR’s practice to keep coaches together for long periods of time, with a set number at each end. 

These coaches are the later 59ft type built from 1934 with flush sides, constructed with steel panels over a wooden framework. They were painted olive green in early SR days and, from 1939, in Bulleid’s malachite green, before most received the standard BR crimson and cream following nationalisation from 1949.

The Hornby BR Maunsell Third Class S2756S Set 226 - Brake is a model of a British Railways coach produced as part of the 2025 Range. The model is painted in BR livery with a crimson and cream colour scheme and features sprung metal buffers. It is designed to operate on OO gauge tracks and has a minimum radius curve requirement of 2nd Radius, equivalent to 438mm.

The real-life coaches that this model is based on were introduced by Richard Maunsell in the 1920s, following the formation of the Southern Railway in 1923. Over 1,200 of these coaches were built, forming 139 sets, with coaches often being kept together for long periods of time. The later 59ft type of coach, built from 1934, had flush sides and was constructed with steel panels over a wooden framework. Initially painted olive green, they were later repainted in Bulleid's malachite green from 1939, before receiving the standard BR crimson and cream livery following nationalisation in 1949.
