Manufacturer description

Designed for the 1939 London to Maidstone and Gillingham electrification scheme, Unit 2611 was one of the first 2-HAL units to be built at Eastleigh, entering service in February 1939. Unit 2611 was damaged by enemy action while at London Victoria Station on 9 October, 1940, but was repaired and sent back to service.

Involved in a collision with a 2-BIL in late 1959, the undamaged vehicles from each set were paired as a '2-HIL'. 2611 was eventually reverted to being a 2-HAL unit.

Hornby British Rail 2‑HIL unit 2611 (model numbers HAL DMBT No 10729 and BIL DTC(L) No 12146, part R3699) is a 5‑pole skew‑wound, DCC‑ready model with an 8‑pin socket. It is built to OO gauge, measures 264 mm in length and runs on a power‑bogie only. The model has a pristine finish in green livery with a Late Crest, features a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement, and runs on 2‑second radius curves (438 mm). It carries the running number 2611 and is intended to represent a British Rail Class 402 “2HAL” electric multiple unit.

The prototype represented by the model was built between 1938 and 1955 by the Southern Railway, with a total production of 100 units. Introduced in 1939 it served British Railways and was capable of a maximum speed of 60 mph. The model portrays the period of British Railways Late Crest.

The real unit 2611 was designed for the 1939 London‑to‑Maidstone and Gillingham electrification scheme and entered service in February 1939. It was damaged by enemy action on 9 October 1940 while at London Victoria station, subsequently repaired and returned to service. After a collision with a 2‑BIL in late 1959, the undamaged vehicles from each set were temporarily paired as a “2‑HIL”, before 2611 was ultimately reverted to a 2‑HAL formation.
