Era 5 (1956 to 1966) British Railways Late Crest
The ‘County’ Class was the last of the GWR-designed two-cylinder 4-6-0s, with 30 built at Swindon between 1945 and 1947 to the design of Chief Mechanical Engineer, Frederick Hawksworth.
‘County of Dorset’ entered service in February 1946 and spent most of its early years in the West Country at Bristol, Plymouth, Truro and Penzance, before transferring to Shrewsbury in December 1951. Its final move was to Swindon in September 1963, from where it was withdrawn in July the following year and scrapped at Cashmore’s yard in Newport, South Wales.

The real ‘County of Dorset’ entered service on 6 February 1946 and initially operated in the West Country, based at Bristol, Plymouth, Truro and Penzance. It was transferred to Shrewsbury on 1 December 1951, moved to Swindon on 9 September 1963 and was withdrawn on 13 July 1964, after which it was scrapped at Cashmore’s yard in Newport, South Wales.
