Manufacturer description

Display the bold logo of Glenochil Yeast Factory on this 88DS model locomotive. This diesel features NEM tension lock couplings and a lovely green livery.

The 80/88hp Ruston & Hornsby 4wDM was a reliable machine and ideal for the modest demands of smaller industrial concerns. Several found use in Scotland shunting rail-connected whisky distillery yards – in this case the yeast factory alongside the distillery of the same name, located just south of Menstrie in Clackmannanshire, where sidings connected with the Cambus-Alva branch line.

Works No. 245030 was built in 1947 and worked the factory yard until 1969, when it was sold to William Kerr Ltd in Stirling. It moved to Babcock & Wilcox Ltd., boiler makers in Renfrew, in 1971, where it remained until about 1978, then presumably scrapped.

The prototype was a Ruston & Hornsby 4‑wheeled diesel‑mechanical of 80–88 hp, commonly used by small industrial sites in Scotland, particularly in whisky‑distillery yards. The locomotive served the Glenochil Yeast Factory near Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, with sidings onto the Cambus‑Alva branch line.
