Prototype Era
Era 11 (2016 to 2026) The Last Days of Privatisation
The RailRoad Class 57 locomotive model brings you a detailed, yet durable version of a classic diesel locomotive. With plastic buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this is a great example of a modern locomotive. Plus, it's DCC sound-fitted, ready for use on your HM7000 layout.
The Class 57s were a rebuild of Class 47s, retaining the basic bodyshell. They were fitted with reconditioned EMD engines and similar traction motors to those used on the Class 56s.
The initiative came from Freightliner growing increasingly frustrated at the poor reliability of its ageing fleet of Brush-built Class 47s. The work was carried out at Brush Traction in Loughborough between 1998 and 2004, with 33 remanufactured locomotives completed.
Freightliner abandoned plans to convert further examples, instead choosing the new Class 66. Operators have since included Virgin Trains, Arriva Trains Wales, First Great Western, Colas Rail, Direct Rail Services, Rail Operations Group and Advenza Freight. 57306 was formerly 47814, it is still in service with GB Railfreight.

* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Hornby RailRoad GBRf Class 57 – 57306 (DCC sound fitted) is a model locomotive supplied by Hornby with part number R30441TXS. It represents the current era and is equipped with sprung metal buffers, NEM tension‑lock couplings and a DCC sound unit, making it suitable for use on an HM7000 layout.
The real Class 57 locomotives were rebuilds of the older Class 47s, retaining the original bodyshell while receiving reconditioned EMD engines and traction motors similar to those fitted to Class 56s. The conversions were carried out at Brush Traction in Loughborough between 1998 and 2004, resulting in 33 units. Although Freightliner later chose the new Class 66 for further replacements, the rebuilt locomotives have been operated by a range of companies including Virgin Trains, Arriva Trains Wales, First Great Western, Colas Rail, Direct Rail Services, Rail Operations Group and Advenza Freight. Unit 57306, formerly numbered 47814, remains in service with GB Railfreight.
