History

This locomotive was completed at the London & South Western Railway’s Nine Elms Works in late December 1900. Of the 66 built, 35 of the T9 Class were completed at Nine Elms, with a further 31 examples built by Dübs & Co at Polmadie in Glasgow. 

Nicknamed ‘Greyhounds’ as they consistently ran at speeds of up to 85mph, the last in service was No. 30120, which is preserved as part of the National Collection. Originally paired with a conventional six-wheel tender, it received an eight-wheel watercart version in July 1935. Renumbered 30302 after Nationalisation in 1948, it was withdrawn in September 1952.

The Hornby Southern Rail Class T9 locomotive, model number 302, is a OO gauge model from the 2025 Range. It features a DCC Ready 21 pin socket and is finished in Southern Railway green livery. The model has a 5 pole skew wound motor and a minimum radius curve of 2nd radius, which is 438mm.

The locomotive is designed to represent the Big Four era of British railways, which included the Southern Railway, London, Midland & Scottish Railway, London & North Eastern Railway, and Great Western Railway. It is based on the real-life Class T9 locomotives, which were built by the London & South Western Railway at Nine Elms Works in 1900, with 35 examples built at this location and a further 31 by Dübs & Co at Polmadie in Glasgow.

The real-life Class T9 locomotives were nicknamed 'Greyhounds' due to their high speed of up to 85mph. They originally had a six-wheel tender but were later modified to use an eight-wheel watercart in 1935. The last locomotive in service was No. 30120, which is now preserved as part of the National Collection.
