History
The Hornby 88DS ‘Hilsea’ represents Ruston & Hornsby's durable 0-4-0 industrial shunter, delivered new to British Gas (Southern) in 1961. Based at Hilsea Gas Works, No. 1139 worked shunting duties until its retirement and preservation in the late 1980s.

A Hornby OO gauge model of the Ruston & Hornsby 88DS shunter, numbered 1139 and formerly operated by British Gas (Southern). The model replicates the original 0‑4‑0 industrial locomotive that entered service in 1961 at Hilsea Gas Works and remained in use until its withdrawal and preservation in the late 1980s.
The kit measures 82 mm in length, rides on a die‑cast chassis with metal buffers, and is fitted with NEM couplings incorporating a tension lock. It is DCC‑ready via a six‑pin socket and is supplied in the British Gas blue and white livery.
Key specifications include a minimum curve radius of the first radius (371 mm), a wheel arrangement of 0‑4‑0, and the manufacturer part number R30016. The model represents the British Rail Blue (pre‑TOPS) period.
