Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
These charismatic vehicles – nicknamed “Chip Vans” due to their bright livery and smoky chimneys – were introduced in 1925–1932 to reduce operating costs and attract passengers to local services. They were a precursor to modern diesel railcars.
In some ways, the LNER’s Sentinel railcars were victims of their own success, attracting so many passengers that they often couldn’t cope with demand.
At their peak, 80 vehicles across 13 diagrams were operated by the LNER, with Diagram 96 and 97 the most numerous. They worked across all LNER areas, from North London commuter lines to rural branch lines in East Anglia, the Midlands, Cheshire and Scotland. Yorkshire and the North East were key strongholds.
A 1934 LNER report showed they outperformed early diesel railcars, covering up to 2.25 million miles per year with some working 17 hours a day. However, lightweight construction and reliability issues led to withdrawal by 1948, with just No. 2136 HOPE briefly surviving into the BR era.
Our new model celebrates these important but often overlooked pioneers, offering Diagram 96 and 97 railcars in classic LNER liveries—perfect for both branch lines and main line layouts.

Heljan Sentinel Railcar – CLC Buff/Brown – 602 – DCC Sound Fitted (Manufacturer Part Number HJN1018‑DCC) is a die‑cast model of an LNER Sentinel railcar, representing the period 1925‑1932 when the vehicles were introduced to reduce operating costs and attract passengers to local services. The railcars, often called “Chip Vans”, were a precursor to modern diesel railcars and were used across the LNER network, from North London commuter routes to rural branches in East Anglia, the Midlands, Cheshire, Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland.
The model reproduces Diagram 97 (No 602) in the Cheshire Lines Committee light/dark brown livery, with destination boards for Stockport, Liverpool, Widnes and Marple. It features separately controlled LED lighting, bi‑colour head and tail lamps, interior and cab illumination, and five switchable lighting functions via DCC. A low‑profile motor is hidden beneath the saloon, and the kit includes NEM couplers with magnetic coupling bars.
Electronics are supplied by ESU, with “Stay Alive” capacitors for smooth operation and a factory‑fitted speaker. The Next18 DCC decoder interface allows optional factory‑fitted ESU sound projection. Detail variations cover Diagram 96 toplight vents, Diagram 97 droplight windows, multiple LNER regional versions, and the CLC variant. The interior shows partitions, reversible seating, and a detailed engine room and cab.
Overall the model offers a realistic representation of an LNER Sentinel railcar, suitable for both branch‑line and main‑line railway layouts, with reliable motor performance and extensive lighting and sound options.
