Manufacturer description

The GWR pioneered the use of diesel railcars for passenger traffic in the 1930s. The most numerous variant was the batch built in 1940-42 with its distinctive angular ‘razor edge’ bodywork. Employed on branch lines and local services, they were the perfect single vehicle passenger train and continued to provide sterling service until replaced by BR DMUs in the early-1960s. This model features separately switchable headlamps, tail lights, saloon and cab lights and a fully detailed interior.

The Heljan GWR AEC Railcar (BR Crimson/Cream, W20W) is a weathered OO‑scale model representing a British Railways early‑crest diesel railcar built by AEC and GWR Swindon Works between 1940 and 1942. It replicates the angular “razor edge” bodywork of the most numerous batch, which served on local and branch‑line passenger and parcels services until being superseded by BR DMUs in the early 1960s.

The model includes nine separately controlled lighting functions for headlamps, tail lights, saloon and cab lights, and a fully detailed interior with finely modelled cab furnishings. It features a low‑profile motor driving all axles, etched metal handrails, sprung buffers, NEM and screw‑link couplers, and a 21‑pin DCC interface with DCC‑sound readiness. Construction is robust and the decoration follows the period livery.

Technical data: the railcar is class AEC, one of 14 plus a prototype built, with a service career spanning 1940‑1962 on the GWR/BR Western Region. The overall length is 200 mm. Manufacturer part number is 9407.
