Prototype Era
Era 11 (2016 to 2026) The Last Days of Privatisation
BR’s standard 25kV AC electric locomotive of the late-1960s, developed using experience gained with the earlier ‘AL1’ to ‘AL5’ classes. A handful of ‘86s’ remain in use today both in the UK and overseas. This latest variant features a number of improvements over our previous Class 86s, including separately switchable tail lights in DCC mode. It focuses on the previously overlooked mixed traffic ‘86/4’ and freight-only ‘86/6’ sub-classes modified from the mid-1980s onwards.
Models are supplied with either a Faiveley (*) or Brecknell Willis high-speed (+) pantograph.

Heljan Class 86 - Freightliner (OO scale) is a model of British Rail's standard 25kV AC electric locomotive introduced in the late 1960s. The model carries the manufacturer part number 8648 and represents the current era, reflecting the mixed‑traffic 86/4 and freight‑only 86/6 sub‑classes that were modified from the mid‑1980s onward. It is supplied with either a Faiveley or a Brecknell Willis high‑speed pantograph.
The locomotive is fitted with a smooth‑running motor and flywheel, and it is 21‑pin DCC ready. It includes NEM couplings, sprung buffers and working lights, with separately switchable tail lights when operated in DCC mode. The model is also sound ready, allowing optional sound modules to be added.
Finely applied livery details give the model a realistic appearance, and other Class 86 locomotives in different liveries are available from the same manufacturer.
