Model Rail Class 48 Diesel Loco number D1703 in BR Two-Tone Green with full yellow ends - weatheredWhen Heljan announced its all-new âOOâ gauge Class 47 project, we took the opportunity to commission the first ever ready-to-run model of the Class 48 - a small fleet of Brush Type 4s equipped with experimental Sulzer V12 power units. Although very similar to a â47â, the Class 48s featured significant alterations to the roof to accommodate a revised exhaust system, plus modified engine room doors and ventilation grilles.
Our exclusive Class 48 boasts the same high specification as Heljanâs all-new Class 47, representing Heljanâs most complex âOOâ model to date, with a specially tooled bodyshell to accurately reflect the changes made to the â48sâ.

Heljan Class 48 Diesel D1703 in BR twoâtone green with full yellow ends â weathered, released as a limitedâedition model for Model Rail Magazine. The model carries the manufacturer part number 4823 and is supplied as a readyâtoârun (RRY) OOâscale locomotive.
It is fitted with a 21âpin DCC socket, a fiveâpole motor with twin flywheels, directional head and tail lights, interior lighting and NEMâcoupler pockets. The locomotive represents the British Railways âLate Crestâ period and is supplied in gauge OO.
The model is based on Heljanâs recent Class 47 project and incorporates a specially tooled bodyshell to reflect the Class 48âs distinctive roof, revised exhaust system, modified engineâroom doors and ventilation grilles. Production of this version was undertaken exclusively for Model Rail.
