Prototype Era
Era 5 (1956 to 1966) British Railways Late Crest
When Heljan announced its all-new ‘OO’ gauge Class 47 project, we took the opportunity to commission the first ever ready-to-run model of the Class 48 - a small fleet of Brush Type 4s equipped with experimental Sulzer V12 power units. Although very similar to a ‘47’, the Class 48s featured significant alterations to the roof to accommodate a revised exhaust system, plus modified engine room doors and ventilation grilles.
Our exclusive Class 48 boasts the same high specification as Heljan’s all-new Class 47, representing Heljan’s most complex ‘OO’ model to date, with a specially tooled bodyshell to accurately reflect the changes made to the ‘48s’.
This model features:
Five-pole motor with twin flywheels Directional head/tail lights Interior lights NEM Coupler PocketsThese models produced exclusively for Model Rail by Heljan.
Special commissions are usually only available new from the commissioning organisation, and may well have sold out on pre-order before they even end up listed here! But you may be able to find used items on marketplace or auction websites.

Heljan Class 48 diesel locomotive D1706 is a ready‑to‑run OO gauge model in British Railways two‑tone green with full yellow ends. It is offered as a limited‑edition product for Model Rail Magazine and carries the Heljan part number 4822.
The model represents the British Railways late crest period and replicates the small fleet of Brush Type 4 locomotives fitted with experimental Sulzer V12 power units. While visually similar to the Class 47, the Class 48 features a modified roof, revised exhaust system, altered engine‑room doors and changed ventilation grilles, all reproduced with a specially tooled bodyshell.
Technical specifications include a five‑pole motor with twin flywheels, directional head and tail lights, interior lighting, a NEM coupler and pockets for DCC accessories. The locomotive is fitted with a 21‑pin socket for digital command control. This model was produced exclusively for Model Rail by Heljan.
