Every station needs to sell tickets, and as part of modernisation plans from British Rail, this became easier with the introduction of the ‘QuickFare’ ticket machines in 1989. These machines were designed to allow passengers to issue their own tickets without the need of a member of staff. They were particularly useful at quiet or unmanned stations. These machines have since been phased out and replaced by more modern equipment.

Gaugemaster Modern Train Ticket Machines – pack of two pre‑built units. Model GM474 is supplied in a pristine finish and measures 12 mm in length, 7 mm in depth and 26 mm in height. The machines are designed for use at railway stations where tickets need to be issued without staff assistance.
The design follows the legacy of the QuickFare ticket machines introduced by British Rail in 1989, which allowed passengers to purchase their own tickets at quiet or unmanned stations. The original QuickFare units have been withdrawn and superseded by more recent equipment such as the Gaugemaster models.
