The Ellis Clark Trains 25T Lowmac wagon is an OO gauge model representing British Rail's Blue era. The model features a diecast frame, detailed end fittings and pipework, and a NEM pocket combined with a vacuum cylinder. The cylinder can be replaced with a fully detailed one. Other details include sprung metal buffers, optional EM brake shoes supplied in a detail pack, finely detailed etched brass parts, and separately fitted etched brass tie down rings. The model also features brass bearings with pin point axles and a fully detailed chassis.
The Lowmac wagon has a long history that dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. The design was developed to transport large machinery and vehicles on Britain's railways, where the loading gauge was often restricted. The wagons were used to transport military vehicles during World War II, and were later used to transport heavy loads for the construction industry and agriculture. British Railways ordered a batch of new Lowmacs in 1950, and they continued to be used until the 1990s.
Lowmacs can be used in a variety of modelling scenarios, including wartime traffic, peacetime freight and mixed traffic. They can be used to transport a range of loads, including farm and engineering machinery, oil tanks, and injured wagons. Some Lowmacs were modified in the 1960s to support containers, and were later used as 'runner' wagons to transport long sections of rail or concrete beams. Many Lowmacs have been preserved and are now on display at sites around the UK.
