Specific Locomotive History

Built for the Ministry of Supply in January 1944 and delivered as number ‘3672’ she was eventually renumbered as ‘73672’ with works number 25458. The engine was shipped to Egypt with 15 other class members and placed in store. By October 1945 the locomotives were deemed surplus to requirements, sold to the Hellenic State Railways and shipped to Salonika in January 1946. ‘73672’ was renumbered Λβ960 and based in the Salonika divisions working duties such as the Athens - Istanbul express.

Final withdrawal came in 1979 where it was purchased by Mr. D. Milham and repatriated to the Lavender Line at Isfield, Essex, in August 1984. After repairs the locomotive was renumbered ‘3672’ and on 6th August 1985 was named ‘Dame Vera Lynn’ by the lady herself. ‘3672’ then moved to the North Yorkshire Moors railways and is currently under overhaul having just had a completely refurbished tender, with the fabrication carried out by Ian Rileys of Heywood.
