Manufacturer description

Prototype

Hawthorn Leslie and Company was formed by the merger of the shipbuilder A. Leslie and Company in Hebburn with the locomotive works of R. and W. Hawthorn at St.Peter’s in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1886. The company manufactured locomotives to order for main line companies and later had a number of standard designs including 0-4-0 saddle tanks and fireless locomotives.

In 1937 Robert Stephenson of Darlington amalgamated with the locomotive works at Forth Banks to form Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns Ltd. By this time Hawthorn Leslie had built 2,783 locomotives.

The newly formed Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns became a subsidiary of the Vulcan Foundry in 1943 and Hawthorn’s 137-year connection with Forth Banks ended.

The Dapol model is based on the 0-4-0 saddle tanks built between 1899 and 1924. They were produced in large numbers and continued in a variety of industrial uses (included Iron works, collieries and power stations) until the early to mid 1970’s. Over 10 locomotives have made it into various states of preservation.

Dapol’s Hawthorn Leslie 0‑4‑0ST “Fearless” is a model of a maroon‑lined, straw‑lidded steam tank locomotive. It is supplied with DCC 18 ready equipment and carries the manufacturer part number 4S‑024‑016.

The prototype was built by Hawthorn Leslie and Company, which was formed in 1886 when A Leslie of Hebburn merged with the locomotive works of R and W Hawthorn in Newcastle upon Tyne. The company produced a range of standard 0‑4‑0 saddle‑tank locomotives between 1899 and 1924, many of which were used in industrial settings such as iron works, collieries and power stations. In 1937 Hawthorn Leslie’s locomotive works joined with Robert Stephenson of Darlington to become Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns Ltd, a subsidiary of the Vulcan Foundry from 1943. Over ten examples of the original locomotives survive in preservation.

The Dapol model features a finely moulded body with separate detail additions, die‑cast wheels with coloured relief, a die‑cast compensated chassis, and NEM socket pockets as standard. Power is provided by a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor, and the DCC socket (NEXT‑18) is accessed via a lift‑off die‑cast saddle tank. An accessory bag containing spares and optional detail is included.

This model represents the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and is available both as a ready‑to‑run DCC fitted version and as a basic kit for further detailing.
