Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
The 48XX and 58xx was designed to replace the earlier 19th century George Armstrong Wolverhampton 517 class. Charles Collett improved the design with new higher pressure boilers and an improved cab. A total of 75 14xx were built with auto gear for working with trailer cars and when introduced were numbered 48xx to 4874 with 20 non auto fitted 58xx class constructed for general purpose traffic. The first locomotives entered service in 1932, with most running into the 1960s. The 4800 with autocoach meant the locomotive could be controlled from there which negated the requirement to run the locomotive round at the end of the journey. This format was known as a push-pull train. After the war experiments with oil firing of the 28xx class would be renumbered in the 48xx class, therefore the original 48xx class were renumbered 1400 to 1474. Four members of the class have been preserved 1420, 1442. 1450 and 1466.

Dapol 14XX Class 0-4-2 1444 BR Green Lined Early Crest steam locomotive â DCC Sound is a readyâtoârun model in Dapolâs 4Sâ006â021S range. The model is fitted with DCC sound, represents a British Railways Early Crest locomotive of the Class 14, and carries the manufacturer part number 4Sâ006â021S.
The real locomotives were introduced in 1932 to replace the 19thâcentury George Armstrong Wolverhampton 517 class. Charles Collettâs revisions included higherâpressure boilers and an improved cab. Seventyâfive examples were built, numbered 48xx to 4874, with a further twenty nonâauto 58xx units for general traffic. Many served into the 1960s and were capable of pushâpull operation via an autocoach. After renumbering following postâwar oilâfiring experiments, the original 48xx series became 1400â1474. Four members of the class have been preserved: 1420, 1442, 1450 and 1466.
The model incorporates a dieâcast chassis, running plate, wheels with metal tyres, boiler and firebox, and a fully compensated chassis. Details include a realistic cab interior, bunker steps for postâ1936 examples, a removable cab roof held by magnets, two footplate styles to represent both 48xx and 58xx variants, Collettâsprung straightâshank buffers, internal motion parts, topâfeed where appropriate, expertly applied liveries and printed number plates with etched plates supplied in the accessory pack.
Technical features include a slideâin PCB that allows toolâfree installation of a NEXTâ18 DCC decoder and a noâsolder speaker connection through the smokeâbox door. The locomotive is equipped with firebox glow synchronised with sound, a highâquality coreless motor, a NEXTâ18 DCC socket and options for DCCâready, DCCâfitted or DCCâsoundâfitted configurations. Factoryâfitted models also offer the RealDrive feature for enhanced driving performance.
