Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
The prototype coaches were constructed between 1914 and 1920 made of steel body sides with an absence of panelling but with bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted glass top light windows, sitting on Churchward 9’-0” bogies. They were designed to operate as a set comprising Left hand and right-hand Brake Thirds, 1 or 2-Thirds and left hand and right-hand Composites enabling all corridor windows to be displayed on the same side, commonly used for cross country and main line working between cities.

Dapol GWR Corridor Toplight 1947 Chocolate & Cream Great Western Composite LH (model 6938, part number 4P‑021‑502) is a 00 gauge railway coach representing a Great Western Railway composite carriage from the post‑war period. The model forms part of Dapol’s Big Four range, covering the LNER, LMS, GWR and SR.
The prototype coaches were constructed between 1914 and 1920 with steel side panels, bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted glass toplight windows. They were originally built for cross‑country and main‑line service, operating as part of a set that included left‑hand and right‑hand brake thirds, 1/2‑thirds and composites, allowing all corridor windows to face the same side.
The chassis features die‑cast frames with two stamped metal compensation beams that provide wheel‑bearing electrical pick‑up via stub axles. Two styles of underframe truss rod are available, and the bogies are modelled on Churchward 9‑ft 0‑in castings. Wheels are sized for 00 gauge (16.5 mm) with clearance for 18.2 mm gauge wheels, and the axles are 26 mm over end points. Couplings are close‑coupled on a cam to negotiate R2 (438 mm) curve trackwork, and the model can accept NEM pockets for magnetic couplings or be fitted with traditional NEM‑compatible couplings supplied by the customer. Sprung metal buffers are included.
The body is built from separate ABS‑plastic side shells, with a gap‑free corridor connection suitable for R2 curves. The interior is decorated and includes individually fitted luggage racks in each passenger compartment, roof ventilators appropriate to the period, metal door and commode handles, and destination boards supplied separately for the modeller to attach. Interior lighting is provided, and a DCC decoder plug with a blanking plug is fitted.
The model is ready for use on 00 gauge layouts and can be integrated with Dapol’s range of accessories, offering a historically accurate representation of a 1947 chocolate and cream Great Western composite carriage.
