Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
The prototype coaches were constructed between 1914 and 1920 made of steel body sides with an absence of panelling but with bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted glass top light windows, sitting on Churchward 9’-0” bogies. They were designed to operate as a set comprising Left hand and right-hand Brake Thirds, 1 or 2-Thirds and left hand and right-hand Composites enabling all corridor windows to be displayed on the same side, commonly used for cross country and main line working between cities.

Dapol GWR Corridor Toplight 1935 Chocolate & Cream Roundel Brake Third (LH) 3788 is a 00‑gauge model of a Great Western Railway brake third coach. The kit is supplied under the Dapol part number 4P‑021‑304 and represents a prototype built between 1914 and 1920, typical of the period when the four major British companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) operated the “Big Four” network.
The chassis features die‑cast bogie frames with stamped metal compensation beams that allow wheel‑bearing electrical pick‑up via stub axles. Two styles of underframe truss rods are offered, and the model includes either close‑coupled NEM magnetic couplings or provision for traditional NEM‑compatible couplings. Wheels are sized for 00‑gauge (16.5 mm) track but accommodate the larger 18.2 mm gauge wheels used on some layouts; axles are 26 mm over the end points and the model is fitted with sprung metal buffers.
Coach sides are made from separate ABS‑plastic sections, and the body incorporates a gap‑free corridor connection suitable for R2 (438 mm) curves. The kit supplies a roof ventilator, metal door and commode handles, a destination board, interior lighting, a DCC decoder plug and a blanking plug. Interior fittings include a luggage rack in each passenger compartment and optional period‑specific ventilators.
