Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
The prototype coaches were constructed between 1914 and 1920 made of steel body sides with an absence of panelling but with bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted glass top light windows, sitting on Churchward 9’-0” bogies. They were designed to operate as a set comprising Left hand and right-hand Brake Thirds, 1 or 2-Thirds and left hand and right-hand Composites enabling all corridor windows to be displayed on the same side, commonly used for cross country and main line working between cities.

Dapol GWR Corridor Toplight 1925 Lined Chocolate & Cream Brake Third (LH) – Part number 4P‑021‑104. This 00 gauge model represents a Great Western Railway brake‑third coach from the period 1914 to 1920, the era of the “Big Four” railway companies. The prototype was built with steel side panels, bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted top‑light glazing, and rode on Churchward 9‑ft bogies.
The chassis is die‑cast with a metal frame that includes two stamped compensation beams to provide wheel‑bearing electrical pickup via stub axles. Two versions of underframe truss rods are available, and the model is equipped with sprung metal buffers. Couplings are close‑coupled on a cam to negotiate R2 (438 mm) curves and feature NEM pockets for magnetic couplings, though the coach can also accept traditional NEM‑compatible couplings supplied by the modeller. Wheels are sized for 00 gauge (16.5 mm) with clearance for 18.2 mm gauge wheels, and the axles are 26 mm over the end points.
The body is made from separate ABS plastic side shells, with a gap‑free corridor connection suitable for R2 curves. The interior is fitted with a luggage rack in each passenger compartment, roof ventilators appropriate to the period, metal door and commode handles, and provision for destination boards that the modeller can install. Interior lighting is supplied, and the model includes a DCC decoder plug and a blanking plug for optional wiring.
