Prototype Era
Era 2 (1875 to 1923) Pre-grouping
The prototype coaches were constructed between 1914 and 1920 made of steel body sides with an absence of panelling but with bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted glass top light windows, sitting on Churchward 9’-0” bogies. They were designed to operate as a set comprising Left hand and right-hand Brake Thirds, 1 or 2-Thirds and left hand and right-hand Composites enabling all corridor windows to be displayed on the same side, commonly used for cross country and main line working between cities.

Dapol GWR Corridor Toplight 1914 Lined Crimson Lake Brake Third LH 3772 is a 00 gauge (16.5 mm) model of a Great Western Railway brake third coach, representing the pre‑grouping period. The prototype coaches were built between 01/01/1914 and 31/12/1920 and featured steel side bodies, bolection mouldings around the windows and frosted glass toplight windows. They rode on Churchward 9‑foot bogies and were intended for use as part of a mixed set of left‑hand and right‑hand brake thirds, 1‑ or 2‑thirds and composites, allowing all corridor windows to be displayed on the same side for cross‑country and main‑line service.
The chassis includes die‑cast bogie frames with two stamped metal compensation beams that provide wheel‑bearing electrical pick‑up via stub axles. Two styles of underframe truss rods are offered, and the chassis is fully die‑cast. Couplings are designed to be close‑coupled on a cam to negotiate R2 (438 mm) curve trackwork and feature NEM pockets for magnetic couplings, though traditional NEM‑compatible couplings can also be fitted. Wheels are sized for 00 gauge but allow clearance for 18.2 mm gauge wheels, with axles 26 mm over end points and sprung metal buffers.
The coach body is supplied in separate ABS‑plastic side shells. Interior fittings include gap‑free corridor connections for R2 curves, a luggage rack in each passenger compartment, roof ventilators appropriate to the period, metal door and commode handles, and detachable destination boards for modelers to apply. All coaches are equipped with interior lighting, and a DCC decoder plug with a blanking plug is provided.
Manufacturer part number: 4P‑021‑004. The model is intended for railway modelers seeking an accurate representation of early GWR corridor coaches in a crimson lake livery.
