ABOUT JAMES GIN
James Gin was conceived when Mr May himself had the idea of blending the flavour of parsnip (as it reminded him of the dampness of England) with Asian spices (to add excitement!).
A promising recipe can be corrupted simply by slightly overdoing just one botanical, leading to a gin that is too lemony, for example, or not junipery enough. They experienced many such setbacks on their long and gin-addled journey. Eventually, they arrived at the unequivocally named Asian Parsnip Gin, celebrating both James’ homeland and the pleasures he’s enjoyed over many decades of international travel at other people’s expense.
Originally intended to be sold at James’ co-owned pub, a run of 1,420 bottles was suggested by Downton Distillery, which is rather a lot for a village pub! They were instead listed online and sold out in a matter of days. James’s experiment has grown into a ‘gin-fuelled monster’ with multiple flavours now sold around the world.
