Prototype Era
Era 11 (2016 to 2026) The Last Days of Privatisation
The JNA-Y, commonly known as the “Hawk”, is a modern Network Rail engineering wagon and a familiar sight on today’s British railway. Introduced through a large-scale rebuild programme, these wagons were converted from the earlier MRA side-tipping ballast wagons, extending their working life and aligning them with modern engineering practices.  Â
Stripped back to their original frames and rebuilt with new steel box bodies, the JNA-Y offers a robust, high-capacity open wagon designed for loading and unloading by excavator or grab. The conversion programme, delivered for Network Rail in the early 2020s, has produced around 300 wagons, making the JNA-Y one of the most numerous contemporary engineering wagon types. Â Â
Â
In service, JNA-Y wagons are used for ballast, spoil and general infrastructure materials, typically operating in long rakes behind modern diesel locomotives, but can equally be spotted operating singly. Finished in Network Rail yellow and often heavily weathered, they are an essential component of the current-era engineering scene, making them an ideal addition to any modern image OO gauge layout.Â
Engineering Prototype
We are delighted to launch the JNA-Y with the Engineering prototypes, showing both the conversions from the end and middle cars of the MRA, which have different buffer beams.

Dapol JNA‑Y “Hawk” Inner Wagon, Network Rail Yellow, part number 4F‑083‑004. The model represents a current‑era Network Rail engineering wagon, built to 00 gauge specifications.
The real‑world JNA‑Y wagons are conversions of the earlier MRA side‑tipping ballast wagons. Stripped to their original frames and fitted with new steel box bodies, they provide a high‑capacity open wagon for loading and unloading by excavator or grab. Around 300 wagons were rebuilt for Network Rail in the early 2020s, making the JNA‑Y one of the most common modern engineering wagons on the British railway network.
The Dapol model uses the highly regarded Dapol 00 gauge MRA as a base, incorporating a new body, improved chassis, bogies and buffer beams. It features finely applied Network Rail yellow livery with accurate printed detail, profiled wheels for smooth running, a heavy die‑cast sub‑floor to add weight, and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings. Both end‑car and centre‑car variations are offered, reflecting the different buffer configurations of the original conversions.
The JNA‑Y is a suitable addition to contemporary OO gauge railway layouts, particularly for scenes involving ballast, spoil or other infrastructure material trains operating behind modern diesel locomotives or as single units.
