On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast assortment of rolling stock designed to carry coal. As Britain rebuilt itself after WWII, the demand for coal soared and it was decided that a standard coal carrying vehicle was required to improve efficiency. The new standard was based on the 1930’s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these new standard wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued into service into the early 1980’s Due to the heavy wear and tear these wagons were subject to, many were modified and rebuilt.

Dapol 21T Hopper BR E289506 Weathered is an OO‑scale model of a British Railways twenty‑one tonne hopper wagon from the Late Crest period. The model is supplied in a weathered finish and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑034‑028.
The prototype wagon was introduced after nationalisation to replace a varied fleet of coal‑carrying wagons. Based on a 1930s LNER design, it was of all‑steel construction and over 23 000 units were built between 1949 and 1958, remaining in service into the early 1980s. Many of the wagons were later modified or rebuilt due to heavy wear.
The Dapol model includes a finely moulded body with accurately applied livery and printed details, a load in the hopper, profiled wheels, NEM pockets and self‑centring couplings.
